She learns the different ways of courage and how it can be portrayed among the other plantation slaves. Sarah, a character who has her own children, excluding Carrie, have all been sold by Rufus. Besides from that she protects and cares for other children in the field as they are her own. Although Nigel works for him in his spare time, Rufus takes a percentage of his pay, but with the money Nigel has, he builds a house for his family that includes his wife and three children. With Nigel and Sarah’s situation, Dana learns that even living life as a slave, they can support their own family and maintain a job and learns the value of slave resistance. An example to that is Nigel’s father telling him to behave when he has done a wrongful act. Nigel is taught to walk away and avoid arguing and showing his anger, but is taught to follow direction from the higher authority and do his own thing at his own time. Eventually, Luke’s master sells him when he showed too much attitude, but Dana takes his advice and uses it to her advantage. In a similar standpoint, Dana learns to work diligently so that others can see and believe she is working to the best of her ability. If she continues to work hard the higher authority will start to look at her to produce efficient and high class
