In this essay I will be explaining how Dana Gioia builds an argument to persuade his audience that the decline of reading in America will have a negative effect on society. In my essay, I will analyze how Gioia uses one or more of the following features to strengthen the logic and persuasiveness of his argument. While reading the article, ‘‘ Why Literature Matters” by the author Dana Gioia, Dana makes a good statement that, argument claiming the levels of interest from young Americans have shown in art in recent years. But they have declined and that this trend is a hug problem to society and it also may come with some really bad consequences. The strategies Dana tries to apply to support his argument is by including citations of completing polls, reports that were made by these big organizations that have issued the evidence and quotations of the studies that were a problem from another author. Dana overall purpose for writing this article was to draw his readers attention and share the information that he has found out and discovered to the Americans for the shortcoming. Due to the main point of the article, the fact that the interest in American with young people shown in art has tremendously decreased a lot and that’s what Dana is trying to avoid. This strategy would unlock the emphasis on the authors point of view of the situation by simply pointing out the negative part of the other changes in Americans life.
