They are aware of what is not normal and they can not help the fact that they are not like you. Dan Slater always tried to be normal. He would push himself over the edge to form a perfect sentence rather than being himself. He stated that ¨The recognition of one's stutter can be as humiliating as the stutter itself.¨ It was uncomfortable for him to know that people took attention to his disability. He wants people to focus on what he is saying and not how he is saying it. That is one of the biggest hardships that people should be conscience about when being around someone with a disability. It hurts them for you to feel sorry for them because all they are trying to be is normal and they will never feel that way if the peers around them make their handicap known. Dan was told to speak at a court sight and with so many people there he was more worried about people thinking he was handicapped then he was about the court speech itself. He tried to relax but ¨a straitjacket of stress shut me down; the muscles in my throat and chest choked off the air. ¨ Having a disability gives you the most anxiety but yet it opens your eyes to the world around you.
