Damon Runyon Play Theatre

On November 27th, 2016, I sat in awe as I watched Guys and Dolls at The Asolo Repertory Theatre. The playwright is Damon Runyon and the director of this production was Josh Rhodes, also included was Music and Lyrics by Frank Loesser. The play was based on a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows. Based in the 40’s and involving gangsters, gamblers, showgirls, and a save you soul missionary, the Golden age of Broadway came to life.
The stage was set on a proscenium theatre with beautifully made stage props. The stage props were lit with plenty of bright neon lights giving a wide array of colors. Lighting using high key lighting along with backlighting, spotlights, key lights and filler lights made for an appropriately lit stage and performance.

While planning a floating crap game, one of the gangsters, Nathan, is short on money. Nathan comes up with a plan for some easy cash. He plans on making a bet with Sky, a bet he is sure to win. He makes a bet with Sky, betting him $1000 that he can’t get Sarah from the Save a Soul Mission, to go on a trip with him out of the country to Havana Cuba. Sky devises a plan and sets out to accomplish his goal. He visits Sarah at the mission and promises to fill the mission with one dozen sinners if she will travel with him. Sarah refuses until she is visited by Captain Cartwright who wants to close the mission unless they are more successful at bringing in sinners at the next revival. Remembering the promise made by the gangster, she quickly agrees to accompany him on his trip. Sarah finally ends up falling in love with the Sky. She even wants to stay with him in Cuba. But upon returning to the mission, Sarah finds that the floating crap game was held at the mission. As the mission was raided by the police and gangsters are running to avoid capture, she quickly feels that she was tricked and the crap game was the real reason for the trip. She then refuses to speak to or have anything to do with Sky, the gangster she fell in love with. In another scene, as Nathan tried to find a place for the floating crap game is confronted with marriage by Adelaide, his fiancé of fourteen years. Trying to avoid marriage he quickly changes the subject. He is soon pushed into agreeing to the marriage when he and his friends are confronted by Brannigan, the local police. He questions them about their large get together. When asked what they were doing, one of Nathan’s friends quickly stated that they were there for a celebration. He tells Brannigan that his friend Nathan is getting married. His fiancé happened to walk up just as he said this and became so excited that he could no longer avoid it.

Wednesday evening, Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University Essential Theatre presented a production of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. The performance was staged at Charles Winter Wood Theatre, where the first scene opened with puzzled faces as Margaret screamed to her husband Brick. Tennessee Williams the author of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof displays homosexuality in a way that it was not accepted and the way lies broke a family apart. The play taken as a whole made you stop and think about the reality of life. My experience was wonderful, I sat back and enjoyed each second of the play.…

As the curtains went up, the audience was present with a metal structure that was the bottom of the Eiffel tower. This beautiful metal structure made me only excited to see what the rest of the sets would look like. The lighting right off the bat was extremely elegant, being that the majority of the lights had a shade of purple. This set the feel of the Parisian world that the audience would be taken on. Before I saw the show, I imagined the stage being much bigger than it actually was in reality.…

Lighting designer, Kevin Adams, and Scenic designer, David Korins, executed the structure of this musical in a simplistic yet creative way. My favorite element of the set design was the grand wall of distinctive lights located at the back of the stage. These lights could change color and effulgence to various levels depending on the time and place of the current scene. For example, during Stew’s time in Amsterdam, the lights were spectacular, scintillating, and colorful. This showed the promiscuous and “sexy” café culture that existed in Amsterdam during that time.…

1.Director Joshua Logan was given a book which had a collection of short stories by James Michener’s, called Tales of the South Pacific. With the book that Logan was given, he hoped that it would be a good source of background research for their up and coming show called South Pacific. Hammerstein had a very hard time at first with coming up with musical- comedic material, so instead he mashed together two serious romantic plots for their show. One of the plots involved a middle aged French planter who had a nascent romance with a young Navy nurse from the American South. The second of the plots was about a WASPy lieutenant who fell in love with a Tonkinese girl.…

The movie played on the screen while actors acted on the stage. The actors never said anything just moved their lips to seem as if the characters in the movie where giving the actors their voice, never throughout the movie did the actual actors talk or even make sounds. Throughout the whole musical, the staged portion was lit by only one huge spotlight. There was no extra lighting that was added or special effects lighting, just one huge spotlight. Everything that was being acted out in the scene or that was important was in the spotlight.…

Lighting was the only source to distinguish locations on the stage. By providing light to the stage, I was able to lose my focus on the biggest scenery on the stage, the house, and focus on the location where the action is taking place, for example, the school, school yard. The lighting designer, Renee Brode, provided all of those elements with no errors. I was also able to distinguish between the real life in the story and Ralphie Parker’s dreams because I saw a little change of colour in the…

    Play Critique Essay

As a person who has only attened two other plays in their life, people might call me “unqualified” to review a play; these people are wrong. My qualifications for play review come solely from an “excess” amount of musicals listened to, pirated videos, and animatics watched on youtube. Seeing Guys and Dolls live was a great experience as a whole, and I enjoyed myself throughly. Understandably there were a few things that I disagreed with, so I will nitpick and pretend that my qualifications alone make me justified to critique a play that no doubt took alot of effort, stress, and love to make.…

The heat from the stage lights, the watchful gazes of the audience, and the sweat dripping off of our faces as we struggle to remember our lines, these sensations of being on stage are what caused the performing arts to become not only an activity, but also a passion and an unexpected source of personal growth. Through my experiences in drama and music I have been able to discover my own meaning of fulfillment and define who the person behind my appearance truly is. My passion in the performing arts started when I was a young child first learning to play the violin. Picking up the violin at the age of 6, I became stuck on one of the most basic songs for almost a whole year. At that time no one believed that I could play the violin, my teacher thought that I was too hyperactive and even my mom attempted to convince me to quit.…

On Friday 24th October 2014, I went to see Frantic Assembly’s version of William Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’, directed by Scott Graham and Steven Hoggett. Frantic Assembly are a theatre company whose performances are primarily dominated by their unusual use of physical theatre to express emotions of characters and uncover hidden meanings within the play through the use of movement. The play was performed to an audience of mostly young adults and teenagers, perhaps because it had been reconceptualised, which possibly appeals to younger generations. Before the play began, there was a very clear and deliberately created atmosphere.…
