Over the next few weeks I’ll be counting down the top ten needs by position for the Dallas Cowboys, as everyone is anxiously awaiting the off-season to fix all they saw go wrong in 2015. Many people have different ideas of how to fix this 4-12 mess, many with valid points. While I strongly support a best player available approach to the draft I’ve ranked the needs how I see them, feel free to debate. Another note, Dallas should have nine draft picks and I have ten needs; obviously they would have to address some in free agency and you should expect them to make a move or two. I’m no cap specialist but have heard the Cowboys will have around 12 million to work with before any other moves are made. …show more content…
Additionally I will do my best to list the players that are available for Dallas to re-sign, top pending free agents, players that they could try to trade for, as well as the top draft prospects for each position. So without further ado:
Number Three: Safety
There has been a chicken or the egg discussion with this Dallas Cowboys defense for some time now. The secondary needs to be upgraded vs. upgrading the pass rush will help the secondary. Well the pass rush is really up in the air now and who knows how that will shape out. Since that is the case we need to upgrade the back end now.
Now Byron Jones should, by all reports, be playing free safety this year instead of floating around the defense. That should help a LOT. Upgrading Barry Church would be nice but in reality with the amount of nickel and dime packages they like to play (and might play more of with the right personnel) having three safeties on the field is perfectly reasonable if not desirable. The flexibility of the back end could help confuse quarterbacks (see 2015 AFC Championship) and we’ve seen the value of Byron Jones locking up a tight end.
Maybe we see a few more coverage sacks along the way; maybe an INT to close out a game. Who knows but I’m pounding the table to find out.
