Dale Chihuly is well known for his glassblowing artistic skills, and his beautiful creations of glass art work. Chihul’s life is well marked by his wonderful glassblowing capabilities. Chihuly is having a wonderful life, even though early on in life he had a rough, miserable, and a grief filled childhood after losing both his brother then his father within two years. Chihuly also quit high school, and later on gained inspiration to go back and get a degree, then start work, and begins his life of glass art. Dale Chihuly was born on 20th August 1941 in Tacoma, Washington. In 1957 when Chihuly was only 16, his older brother George died in a fatal training flight out of Pensacola Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida. As a 15 year old Chihuly had a lot of problems coping with the loss of his brother. Not more than a year later, his father began to get severely ill to the point he had a heart attack which ended up killing him at the age of 51. Dale was frustrated at his inability to learn and speak Italian, so he decided to move to the Middle East. In 1963, during his time in the Negev Desert in Israel, he began to work on a kibbutz- which is normally a farm-. When Dale went to Jericho Jordan, he met a person who would turn his life back to art. This person Dale met was archaeologist Robert Landsman, who together decided to go to ancient Petra. After his experience and inspiration Dale had with Landman, he decided to return to the States. Upon Dale’s return in late 1963, he re-enrolled at The University of Washington. He went to study interior design under Hope Foote and Warren Hill. Chihuly also started weaving classes with Doris Brockway, where he learned how to incorporate weaving with the use of glass shards in order to make woven tapestries.
