I believe that although this quote seems to be common sense, as technology advances, the culture and human interaction retracts and becomes more expectant that if someone is talking to you, they want something. Because of my current career and leadership experiences this next quote helps me keep my patience and approach conflict a different way. Quote 2: “IN TALKING WITH PEOPLE, DON’T BEGIN BY DISCUSSING THE THINGS on which you differ. Begin by emphasizing –and keep on emphasizing- the things on which you agree. Keep emphasizing, if possible, that you are both striving for the same end and that your only difference in one of method and not purpose”
This happens numerous when I am managing 20 workers out on the field. They sometimes tend to argue with me about who's way is better, to the point where they don't see that our common goal is the same. This quote has taught me to emphasize that immediately.
