Dale Carnegie

Dale Carnegie, author of How to Win Friends & Influence People, has much supporting authority on the topics in his book. He has conducted several courses related to business and professional topics. He has taught courses for the “Engineer’s Club of Philadelphia” and for the “New York Chapter of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers” (Carnegie, 1964). While educating students in this professional area, Carnegie (1964) realized that these students needed more education about effective speaking and getting along with people. Therefore, to provide adequate education and instruction to his students, he did extensive research by reading everything that he could find on the subject matter. One of the biggest challenges of an average person is learning how to face people in everyday tasks. According to Carnegie (1964), “The University of Chicago and the United Y.M.C.A. Schools conducted a survey to determine what adults want to study”(p xvii). The second common answer was “how to understand and get along with people; how to make people like you; and how to win others to your way of thinking”(Carnegie, 1964, p xvii). With barely any books published about this subject area, Carnegie (1964) decided to write How to Win Friends & Influence People to use in his own teaching courses.
