Personally, I generally have a great deal of empathy with my patients or family members. I can do this, fairly easily because I have experienced the same issues personally that they are presently going through. When I am able to look a person who is suffering directly in their eyes and express my empathy towards them, it almost immediately transcends to a feeling of compassion. If I were to tell a person who just watched their loved one die, to “get over it, it happens”, my own little world would not be a happy place. Having empathy is something that is developed even at a very young age. Think about the time you broke up with your first boyfriend or girlfriend. It hurt, your feelings were destroyed and as a result you thought it was going to be the end of the world. A: According to our reading to truly build a long lasting relationship, it needs to be built on the qualities of affection, compassion and mutual respect. In truth I believe this to be true however, I also would add that trust, communication are also very important. As people who desire strong relationships, we need to have a feeling of being safe without fear in order to make the relationship last.

A: Dalai Lama defines compassion as a state of mind that is nonviolent, nonharming and nonaggressive. He goes on to define it as a mental attitude based on the wish for others to be free of their suffering and is associated with a sense of commitment , responsibility and respect towards others. We can apply this in our lives on a daily basis by consciously trying to make decisions that help people and not try to hurt them. These principles of compassion are something that can be cultivated and built upon simply by treating people as you wish to be treated.
