What the public did not know was that Daisy is a very pity and self conscious person. Daisy cares a lot about what other people think and this can affect her decisions. One such example of her self consciousness in the story is when Daisy knows Tom is cheating on her and yet she refuses to get a divorce. In her defence it was very taboo for a catholic woman to get a divorce, but when you are extremely rich most anything can be accomplished. What this says about Daisy is that she is a self conscious person who cares about her appearance in the press. She knows divorcing Tom will look bad on her, so she does not do it. Daisy is unhappy and this can be seen when Jordan recalls, “I came into her room half an hour before the bridal dinner, and found her lying on her bed as lovely as the June night in her flowered dress and as drunk as a monkey.” (Pg. 75) What this text is saying is that even right before her bridal shower Daisy got very drunk. Daisy also lacks common decency when it comes to her child, she says, ‘‘How do you like mother’s friends? Do you think they’re pretty?” The child then adds ”Where’s Daddy?”(Pg. 117) What this little conversation says about Daisy and her child's relationship is immense. Daisy cares not how the child feels or even asks how she is doing, but directly asks the little girl questions about Daisy's own life. The child directly asks where her father is without answering the question. What this is saying is that the little girl knows she is not going to get the attention she wants from her mom, so she asks for her father. This indicates how little Daisy cares for the girl and in turn how selfish Daisy
