‘You loved me TOO?’ he repeated.” This quote from The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald shows how Daisy Buchanan is a very troubled lady with many issues. Daisy led a very eventful life which caused her to have many issues. She had conflict within her love life, parenting troubles, and has a very passive mindset.
Daisy was an interesting character to follow throughout the book and she had many conflicts with her love life and could not decide who she should end up with. She had once loved Gatsby before the war, right up to the point where Gatsby was drafted. While he was gone Daisy ended up falling in love with Tom Buchanan. That doesn't mean she didn't love Gatsby. She did love him, a lot, but he ended up going to Oxford and Daisy just ended up losing interest in Gatsby. That was when Tom entered her life, she may not have loved him as much as she loved Gatsby it made more sense for her to be with him. They both lived in East Egg which was where all the old money was and people from East Egg tended to marry other people from East Egg. One instance is when Gatsby left for the war, he said he would come back to her but she went with Tom instead. She did this because it fit the status quo and because she was so passive she gave into the pressure of the city. Daisy also let Gatsby take the blame for her when she hit and killed Myrtle with a car. “‘Was Daisy driving?’ ‘Yes,’ he said after a moment, ‘but of course I’ll say I was.’”(pg 143).
