Daisy was born into a wealthy family so money is not a new concept to her. She understands what to use her money on and how to use it wisely. Daisy does not go on unvalidated shopping sprees and does not by objects for the sake of buying. Myrtle does the opposite. “I want to get one of those dogs,’ she said earnestly. ‘I want to get one for the apartment. They’re nice to have—a dog.’” Myrtle decides to purchase a dog for her apartment, an apartment that she rarely lives in. It is unknown what she plans to do with the dog while she cannot care for it but it is abundantly clear that she has worries about what will happen to the animal. She did not want the dog in order to play with it or to save it from harm. Myrtle only wanted the dog because it cost money that she knew Tom would allow her to spend. With Myrtle’s husband working at a car shop, she is not accustomed to being able to spend money whenever she would like so she takes advantage of the situation. Myrtle and Daisy both cheat on their husbands. Daisy cheats on an already deceitful spouse though while Myrtle’s husband is completely loyal to her. Daisy also goes to another man based off pure love. It is not money that compels her to Gatsby’s side but rather a long lost love that have never been extinguished. Once her love for Gatsby was sparked again, she could not ignore her emotions. Myrtle cheats on her husband in order to upgrade.
