Daenerys Targaryen’s Leadership

[Author’s Note: This paper has book and television show spoilers on the Game of Thrones and terminology that may confuse a non-Game of Thrones fan.] Game of Thrones is a fantasy series based on the Wars of the Roses. The Game of Throne’s plot center around the noble families fight for the Iron Throne, threats from supernatural forces, and how the last exiled Targaryen, Daenerys, will retake the Iron Throne. Daenerys Targaryen’s storyline portrays how leadership is learned. Daenerys’s ability to learn how to lead will allow her to successfully take back the Iron Throne.
Daenerys’s was born after her father, the “Mad King,” was killed during the Sack of King’s Landing. The last Targaryen’s, Daenerys and Viserys, fled to the Free Cities to live in exile. Growing up she was treated by her brother, Viserys, with malice and contempt. Viserys would physically hit Daenerys when he became angered. Growing up under these conditions made Daenerys meek and constantly fearful.

A slave revolt starts inside the city and allows Daenerys to seize the city. Daenerys in response to the treat of the slaves kills Masters in order to show that this treatment will not stand. Barristan councils against this course of action, but Daenerys over rules him. Daenerys then learns that the Masters have retaken Yunkai. Daenerys releasing her failure as a leader decides to postpone her conquest for the Iron Throne in order to learn how to rule the cities she has just conquered. Daenerys holds court where people can come air their grievances. Holding court forces Daenerys to realize that she cannot make decisions without the support of her staff aiding her. Daenerys starts to listen to their advice and is able to more effectively
