Being his wife means cooking three meals a day, cleaning house, taking care of a baby, and also working full time to support family finances. Mrs. Kim could take over the role of his wife because she loved him so much. However, she wanted him to love her and thank her. Although there is gender equality legally, it is easily to see that a male becomes a head of a family. In some places, women have more power than men do, or women are equal to men. However, the gender roles don’t change a lot. Women traditionally take over the home while men go outside the home to seek resources. Back in the day, African American women and wives were expected to support and encourage their husbands and children. As a homemaker, caretaker, and nurturer, an African American was expected to be a good wife and a good mother. Submissiveness and obedience were needed. However, in today’s modern society, the roles of African American women were not limited to domestic chores. Since African American men could not fulfill their fatherly role in the society, African American women have to take care of the home and finances. If an African American woman doesn’t want to do both housework and full time job, there will be no one who blames that woman. It is not a mandatory role. However, Mr. Kim and his family blamed Mrs. Kim’s effort on housework and full time job. Culture is one thing that affects gender roles, but the most important factor is environment.
