Da Vinci’s interest in art became noticeable at a youthful age of 15. His father, Ser Piero, first introduced him to the most respected and flourishing artists in Florence by the name of Andrea del Verrocchio. While working as an apprentice for del Verrocchio at his studio, da Vinci learned different techniques of painting and sculpture, as well as studying various types of mechanical art. At the age of 20, in 1472, da Vinci qualified to become a member of Florence’s guild of Saint Luke, but decided to continue working under del Verrocchio until he became an independent artist and opened up his own workshop in 1478. He was asked to complete an altarpiece that was to be stationed at the Palazzo Vecchio. While working on this piece, he was also asked to paint the “Adoration of the Magi” by the monks of San Donato a Scopeto. Both pieces were soon abandoned and incomplete due to da Vinci’s absence.
Moving on to discover his innumerable talents, da Vinci was requested by Florentine leader Lorenzo de Medici to design a lyre for the future Milan duke, Ludovico Sforza, as a peace offering. This inspired da Vinci into writing a letter to Sforza asking for a job in military engineering.
