DU Leadership Reflection

During my time at the DU, I have held many leadership positions in on-campus organizations. My most current and challenging leadership role has been as Vice President of Programming for my sorority. The hardest part of my role is holding my members and myself accountable for their actions. Upon initiation, every member makes a promise to herself and the sorority to hold herself to the highest standards of character, as her actions no longer reflect just on herself, but on each and every member of our organization as well. As an elected leader of the organization, I have promised to do the same, and I am also responsible to help hold all members accountable for their actions when they are not in line with character expectations, whether it

Responsible Leaders are servant leaders, accountable for their actions and their consequences. I am attending GCU because I am learning important values to succeed in life. I am learning that “faith is a precious gift for those who have it and without it, nothing is possible” (Joyce, 2012, p.132). GCU’s vision is leading a Christian academy by educating scholars to become leaders and servants (Mission and Vision at Grand Canyon University, 2008,…

Doing whatever comes to a leader's mind could be a problem because in a society there are different mind sent between the younger and older generations. “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much” ― Helen Keller . What she meant by that quote is that working together can get us somewhere but working alone and thinking you could make it work will be hard and you will not be able to make your society happy. Partaking in the student council organization has allowed for personal and leadership growth, and is comprised of plentiful downfalls and successes. But I believe that it requires missteps and prosperity to learn and grow as a leader. In terms of strength, my skills in proper and adequate delegation tasks have contributed to the successes of my class. However, delegating and simply telling others what to do is not leadership, it is the act of collaborating with one another to execute an event or achieve the goal. Ultimately, I believe that it is my ability to uplift and empower others as my greatest asset.…

Reflection Growth Plan At the beginning of the course, I felt as though I knew the basics of what it would take to become an educational leader. Through assigned readings, class discussions and the ISLLC School Leadership Self Inventory I’m certain that the learning has just begun. In preparing my Artifacts Notebook, I chose resources that I feel I will be able to rely upon on my journey to and through leadership. I chose to include my quotes assignment, vision paper, ISLLC Standards, ISLLC School Leadership Profile, Good to Great and the Social Sectors, and a copy of a recent Marshall Memo.…

In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…

Last semester probation showed me how as a leader I have to be confident in my decisions I make. I was able to really put this into action when making scheduling decisions for the group of cadets in the capstone. This semester, however, I have come across an area where I need to improve and grow in. I have really worked on being confident, but now I need to work on having moral courage and standing my ground. I was proud of myself for being able to identify this as being a weakness and rather than ignore it or feel down about it, I acknowledge and am seeking ways to better it.…

We see today that many millenniums in our society feel that they don’t have to be accountable. I disagree with this attitude, we must be held accountable and take responsibility for our actions. We all are human and make mistake, but if I make a mistake I want my member hold me accountable. The members that work for me should feel free and open to disagree with me, but at the same time feel they are a contributing part of the team. We must work together to be focused on the mission and what is best for the mission.…

Introduction As I reflect on this course and the results of the Questionnaires, Reflection, and Action Worksheets I have learned many aspects of leadership. I have analyzed the definition of leadership and now have a clearer understanding of it. According to, Introduction to Leadership; concepts and practice, by Peter Northouse (2015), leadership can be composed of many variables such as relationship, trait, ability, skill, behavior, and influence process. He also elaborates on how the “leadership of an individual can be used to influence a group to accomplish a common goal”. In addition, he discusses how leadership is not the same as management (Northouse, 2015, pp. 3-7).…

I was fortunate enough to attend the 2016 H. W. Sumners Leadership Conference where I would have the opportunity to meet a unique pool of influential individuals. Most of my leadership experiences had come from group projects with students who I were familiar with, and the conference gave me the chance to become a team with strangers from across the United States and Mexico. I was not aware of how much I was actually going to get out of the conference. Through the elective workshops, I learned much more about my leadership style and who I could become as a leader. Through the speakers, I learned about the power of creating a vision and pursuing with unyielding faith.…
