During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

Pharmaceuticals and Student Enhancement argues whether a student’s use of cognitive enhancing drugs in education is allowed. Cognitive enhancing drugs are used to help aid a student’s mind in order to access higher levels of performance in order to function at more proficient levels. These drugs also help a student focus and concentrate for longer periods of time. Author Gavin Enck argues in favor of cognitive enhancing drugs only if their reasons for using these enhancements are reflective of ideals of human excellence. While some argue that these drugs are used to help students cheat and others argue that these enhancing drugs are simply another type of educational tool, Enck argues that we look closer at the reasons or motivations a student…

After finishing reading the syllabus, I have a better understanding of EN101. I now know what is expected of us as students, and what we expect from you the teacher. It is a very good idea to not let our parents have any effect on a grade, paper, or assignment, because it makes us as students responsible for our own grades. Having strict deadlines also help all of us be more responsible. With this class, I cannot wait to become a more fluent writer and improve my grammatical skills to help in college.…

This semester in Ms. Wagner’s accelerated english class I learned many important writing techniques that massively improved my writing, like how to use TIQA format in paragraphs, how to avoid bad habits such as the use of “to be” verbs or the overuse of commas, and how to properly write a thesis statement. One of the first skills I learned this semester is how to organize my paragraphs into TIQA format. TIQA formatting is a way to set up a paragraph to keep it nice and neat. It stands for topic sentence (or transition), intro to quote, quote, and analysis. The best example of my improvement using this technique is one of the first writing pieces I did in English this year, the Book of Sands thematic paragraph.…

Out of the many lessons I learned in this course I enjoyed learning the aims of writing, expressive aim, referential aim, persuasive aim, and literary aim. Although my writing experience in the military was writing papers in referential aim and persuasive aim, the reason I choose the three essays below is because they were written in expressive aim. While I was making corrections and editing these three essays, I noticed that there was one common mistake not only in these three essays, but in all of the essays written during this course. The mistake of the improper use of punctuation more specifically comma usage. Even though comma usage is a basic lesson that I should have learned in middle school and mastered in high school, I continue to struggle with the proper use of…

From the Mesopotamian civilization to the present day civilization, writing has taken a place of importance in our daily lives; something I have always struggled with. Through school the most difficult subject that I have always struggled with is English. Growing up my first language was Spanish due to the fact that my parents do know much English. My parents were never able to read to me in English preventing me from hearing and seeing the English language; it was not until I entered elementary school that I was exposed to English. This has contributed to my difficulties in English courses throughout my education.…
