I think you did a great job on the case study. I definitely got the impression that these are the exact types of assessments that would be utilized in schools across the country. My father is a 4th grade teacher and he uses Developmental Reading Assessments all the time; or he works directly with a reading specialist or special educator when they use this assessment. A DRA is a great formative assessment that is flexible, reliable, and can be administered once a year or once a day (in the case of struggling readers). I like DRA assessments because it is an assessment that teachers can administer themselves with no outside assistance. All a teacher needs is a quiet place in a part of the room that allows for one-on-one observation without distractions or interruptions. My dad said that you should explain to each student being tested that you will be sitting down to read with everyone so you can get to know what they have learned about reading. Fortunately, my dad is a teacher in an excellent school with the most well behaved students. Therefore, he does not work with official functional behavior assessments on a regular basis year to year. He is not very familiar with the forms and official questions. However, he does conduct unofficial interviews, observations, and parental participation. But, his belief is that FBAs should be included in every IEP process for students struggling academically because the results can be used to determine if poor academic performance is related to some unseen behavior that no one is noticing (mental, physical, emotional). Then the IEP team can gain the information needed to develop strategies that future teachers can use to help the student in every possible
