DFAT Policy Graduate Program

I am an excellent candidate for the DFAT Policy Graduate program. I have experience with performing high-level analytical work, possess strong communication skills, am organized, and I am a boon to any team.
DFAT represents one of the most exciting and diverse working environments in the Australian Government. The range of challenges one may be faced with is an important incentive for myself. Similarly, the range of people and working environments one may be involved in is very attractive. In an ever increasingly connected world, DFAT plays an important role. Moreover, working with DFAT would enable me to develop my existing skills in a public service role that advances Australia’s and its citizens’ interests.
The standard year format of graduate programs is limited in how much a candidate can engage in any one specific area. DFAT’s two-year format both allows for a greater diversity in experience, as well as a longer practical engagement with each experience. This is very attractive to me, as it allows me to best develop myself in any given area.

My ability to achieve quality outcomes was demonstrated by my thesis, when I analysed counter-terrorism practices in China. I produced a novel and robust report, which detailed the country’s counter-terrorism strategies, the impact of these strategies in curbing political violence, and the relevance of these strategies to wider conceptions of counter-terrorism. I overcame barriers such as a very limited timeframe and a troublesome and inscrutable data set to achieve an excellent mark and produce a valuable piece of research. My academic results in general are testament to my dedication to quality outcomes – a HD average for my

The attack was inclusive of five subways systems, and resulted in the death of twelve people and over 5000 requiring hospitalization. This essay will examine the attack by Aum Shinrikyo on the transportation system in Japan.…

Since their portrayal of terrorism runs, as mentioned, essentially contrary to the overwhelming majority of media outlets, the reader’s interest is immediately held. In the same vein, the authors cater to skeptical readers by providing stories and statistics to back their claims – in fact, evidentiary exposition comprises roughly half of the two page article. And finally, in presenting their main claims, the authors use mitigating language to make their arguments both stronger and more appealing. However, their arguments are by no means bland – if another large-scale, well-planned terrorist attack occurred on U.S. soil tomorrow, most of the claims in this article would seem incredibly arrogant and foolish. That danger represents both the greatest weakness and strength of mockery: it strengthens the authors’ claims by staking their reputation and image on them.…

As the statue of Saddam Hussein was dragged down by an American armored vehicle, Iraqis cheered “Thank you very much,” holding signs that read “Thank You USA” (Losing Iraq 2014). As Col. R. Alan King recounted in PBS Frontline’s documentary Losing Iraq (2014), he remembers thinking “This might just work.” Unfortunately, these early signs of success towards a stable Iraqi government would not continue. Terrorism plays an integral role in the plots of The Hurt Locker, Rendition and Zero Dark Thirty. While each film uniquely centers on counter-terrorism protagonists, the films guard against painting with too broad of strokes by courageously puncturing the traditional good versus evil narrative commonly employed whenever terrorism is discussed. The three films, without explicitly deriding counter-terrorism, goes to great lengths to expose many of its pitfalls. The films are also praiseworthy for their exploration of the oftentimes nuanced dynamics that occur between counter-terrorist experts, civilians and the terrorists themselves. Overall the films challenge moviegoers’ presuppositions, exposing them to viscerally repugnant actions, morally-questionable justifications and a grey reality where the line between terrorist and counter-terrorist at times becomes unclear.…

It is difficult to say how Americans would react to China or Russia targeting and eliminating suspects with drones on American soil, especially if there was a high risk such targeting killings posed a lethal threat to innocent citizens. Those in zones with a high, or even semi-frequent, exposure to drone strikes may start to live more and more in a state of terror. China or Russia in this example certainly would not be countries whom were held in approbation, rather, it is far more likely they would be perceived with the most visceral hatred imaginable. In 2012, opinion polls reported that as many as 90 percent of Pakistanis opposed drone strikes and 74 percent considered the U.S. an enemy, despite the fact that Pakistan is one of the leading recipients of U.S. foreign aid.…
