Unlike most of my colleagues, I have spent an extra year pursuing a DDS-MPH dual degree program to further my interest in the underserved population, a pursuit that has enhanced my understanding of the complex relationship between health, oral health, and the human condition. In an effort to better understand the social determinants of oral health, I have worked closely with some of the nation’s most vulnerable populations – minority older adults. Specifically, I worked on a research project that used Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) methods to assess the relationship between oral health and nutrition among vulnerable seniors who receive home-delivered meals in New York City. Cooperating with dental and non-dental colleagues and learning from each other will help deepen my knowledge and improve my leadership skills. From my various leadership experiences throughout the dental school, including being a teaching assistant, class representative, and various school committee chairs, I witnessed how good leadership and great teamwork can result in higher achievements, positive working environments, and better patient outcomes. As a General Practice Resident, I will readily contribute my time, effort, knowledge and skills to help others to enhance my own learning and to contribute to positive patient outcomes.
