In this book there were many stories about all the different gods and goddesses. One of the stories was about a goddess named Aphrodite. Aphrodite was the goddess of love. Nobody knew where Aphrodite came from, she was the only Olympian who did not have a mother or father. So when Cronus’ wife Rhea had a baby Cronus swallowed the baby, because he didn’t want his child to be stronger than him. Cronus swallowed five children total. Comparison of the Homeric Hymn to Apollo with Callimachus’ Hymn to Apollo reveals that Callimachus’ myth was composed centuries later. Although a writer may be directly influenced by previous writers’ accounts of the same myth, it is evident that Callimachus was not so influenced by the Homeric Hymn to Apollo in this work. Callimachus’ work’s difference in detail and length, mismatching etiologies, and lack of plot similarities all indicate an absence of a direct connection. Callimachus, an author of a later time, composes a Hymn to Apollo that is quite different from the Homeric version. One of the main differences is the difference in length with Callimachus’ version being substantially shorter.…

In the information given by Apollodorus, he refers to Demeter as Demeter, whereas Ovid refers to her as Ceres. Ovid says “Ceres first turned the earth with the curved plough; she first gave corn and crops to bless the land; she first gave laws; all things are Ceres’ gift” (Ovid, 109). In Ovid’s account of the Rape of Persephone, he adds information about Cupid, Hades, Persephone, and introduces a nymph named Cyane. However, although he does add information he also subtracts information given in Apollodorus’ Library. In Apollodorus’ Library Demeter learns from the people of Hermion that Persephone has been kidnapped.…

Powerful and harsh are the gods of ancient Greece. They are to be respected, worshipped and feared in order to live a peaceful and long life. Hesiod represents these gods in similar but contrasting ways through the tale of Prometheus and Pandora in his poems, Works and Days and The Theogony. Though both poems are different and take on a different form they are both considered wisdom literature because we learn a lesson of right and wrong from the tales being told. In these poems we examine the gods through the eyes of the man working for a living and through the eyes of the gods fighting for their place among themselves in Olympus.…

Loyalty manifests itself in abiding by a specific, moral code of conduct of a society, a group, or relationship. Loyalty also means having the moral strength to be true to a person or an ideal. Thousands of years ago the ancient Greeks held fast and true to their beliefs and to the cast of characters that populated their pantheon of human-like gods. Homer’s Iliad, an epic poem of the Trojan War, shows the Greeks’ value of loyalty to their gods, their military, and to their family.…

Demeter, Persephone’s mother, wants her daughter back from the underworld, and because of that she comes in conflict with almost literally every Olympian god. After finding out that her daughter was given to Hades by Zeus, Demeter goes to live with the mortals for a while, then has a temple built for herself in Eleusis. She secludes herself in the temple, and, being the goddess of harvest and agriculture, makes it so that no seed grows for a whole year. The world is in famine, and Demeter “would have made away with humankind, and all the splendid things it gives and sacrifices to Olympus” (Unknown, Hymn to Demeter, 310-312), had Zeus not taken action to stop her. This shows how ruthless and amoral the Greeks perceived their gods to be, willing to wipe out mankind from the face of the earth over a dispute between themselves in which no mortals are involved.…
