Cystoid Macular Edema Essay

Pseudophakic cystoid macular edema (PCME), also called Irvine-Gass syndrome, was identified and described for the first time by Irvine-Gass in the 20th century.1 Although the occurrence of PCME has declined with the use of modern surgical techniques, it is still recognized as one of the most common causes of poor visual outcome following cataract surgery.2 The pathogenetic mechanism underlying this syndrome remains unclear, although several factors have been identified potentially capable of influencing the incidence of PCME such as diabetes, a previous diagnosis of epiretinal membrane, uveitis, retinal vein occlusion, retinal detachment repair and capsule rupture with or without vitreous loss.3
However, the most researchers agree that postoperative inflammation seems to be a major cause of PCME because

Currently, the AgioVue OCT-A (RTVue XR Avanti; Optovue Inc, Fremont, CA) is the first commercially available OCT device able to provide OCT-A images.
Additionally, OCT-A allows the analysis of the superficial capillary plexus (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DPC) which can be examined in isolation contrary to FA, that is not able to visualize all relevant vessel layer in the retina. Ref spaide cystoid macula edema.
A new software update released by AngioVue system allows quantification of the percentage of the area occupied by vessel lumens, around the macula in all retinal plexuses, defined as Vascular Density (VD). Ref Florence normative data for vascular density.
Therefore, the aim of this study was to quantify VD at the level of the SCP and DCP using OCT-A. Additionally, we also evaluated the OCT-A appearance of the SCP and DCP in order to compare these findings with those of FA and SD-OCT, in eyes with

Approximately 10-15 percent of AMD cases involve dry AMD progressing to the more advanced and visually damaging wet form. The hallmark of wet AMD is the formation of choroidal neovascularization (CNV), new irregular blood vessels growing into the subretinal pigment epithelial or subretinal space. Due to their aberrant nature, these…

Dilated fundus exam showed blurred optic disc margins with no hemorrhages or vessel obscurations. Extensive work up for papilledema and papillitis including B-scan, intracranial pressure Codman monitoring, infectious and autoimmune panel was unrevealing. On a subsequent visit, our patient presented with intermittent headaches and blurred vision. At that point, the ophthalmic exam was remarkable for a decreased BCVa to 20/40 OU and subtle cogwheel macular changes OU, which prompted further testing. Macular OCT revealed subfoveal cystic-like changes concerning for retinoschisis.…

Abstract Purpose: to detect the clinical and histological effects of preoperative subconjunctival injection of both Bevacizumab and Mitomycin C (MMC) one month before surgical excision of primary pterygium using a bare sclera technique. Patients and Methods: 20 patients with primary pterygium underwent subconjunctival combined injection of 0.1 ml of MMC (0.2 mg/ml) and 0.1 ml of Bevacizumab (1.25mg/0.1ml ) one month before a bare sclera pterygium excision. The excised pterygium tissues were examined histologically and patients were followed up for at least two years. The excised pterygium of 2 patients without preoperative injection were used for histological comparison.…

Change in Visual Acuity with Eccentricity Humans have a large vison field so it is important to not only test the central vison but also at the peripherals of the retina. This is because individuals tend to not notice vison loss at the peripherals compared to central vision as when an individual views an object they move their eyes and fixate on that object by using their central vison and not their peripheral. Visual acuity is highest at the fovea and lowest at the peripheral which ensures high visual acuity at fixation. A way to measure peripheral vision is the Humphrey perimetry test which assesses the vision field. Any reduction in peripheral vision can indicate the development of disease such as glaucoma or detect any blind spots, scotomas…

When someone develops wet macular degeneration new blood vessels start to grow behind the retinas, which causes leakage of blood and fluids in the eye. This is where the wet and dry are determined. The leakage of all of the fluids in the eye causes permanent damage to the light-sensitive retinal cells, which die off and creates blindspots. In wet AMD, choroidal neovascularization, an abnormal growth of blood vessels, is to blaim. When choroidal neovascularization occurs it tries to supply the eye with more oxygen and nutrients.…

The retina is a very delicate area which requires a healthy flow of blood provided by capillaries. If those capillaries sustain damage, the retina can also sustain damage. Nonproliferative retinopathy happens when the those delicate capillaries start losing their structure and form pouches. This can cause vision to become blurry. Macular edema occurs as the capillaries lose their ability to regulate what passes through their walls.…

The pupil is the black hole inside the disk of the iris, almost circular. The external border of the iris is the separation between the disc of the iris and the white of the eye (sclera). In addition, this border is largely covered by other regions such as: the eyelashes or the eyelids. The main goal of this step is to locate the pupil-iris border and the iris-sclera border, also to extract the different elements that are considered to be noise.…

Moreover, connective tissue growth factor (CTGF, CCN2) plays a major role in the formation of fibrous tissue around the microvessels, which leads to retinal detachment and tearing (21). In addition, a recent study has shown a correlation between proliferative DR development and plasma erythropoietin (EPO), which was significantly increased (22, 23). This result came to light after reports that DR deterioration accelerates after patients start hemodialysis, and the recent identification of EPO as an angiogenic factor independent of VEGF (23,…
