In class this rotation we watched a number of performances throughout the 1600’s-20th century. We have gone over lots of material and highlighted some of the historic developments, especially in France leading to the French Revolution and then in Europe and America to the twentieth century. We have covered lots of different styles including, Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism and Absurdism.
One of my favorite films we watched was called Cyrano de Bergerac, written by Rostand. The play is about a brilliant poet named Cyrano de Bergerac. As the play progresses, he finds himself deeply in love with his cousin, Roxane. Cyrano is known for having a huge ugly nose, and because of this, he is nervous to risk telling Roxane his feelings. When a cadet, Christian, also falls for Roxane, he asks for Cyrano’s help in sharing his feelings. Cyrano decides to help by writing love letters and poetry to Roxane in Christian's name. Roxane eventually finds out that Cyrano has been writing the notes all along and that he is the soul she has fallen in love with. Cyrano draws his sword and kills himself. He collapses

This is a very absurd play. You can tell it is absurd by its very bare setting. The set is completely blank with only a couple of men and a white tree. The two main characters are waiting for a man named Godot. The play consists of the men talking about many different topics while waiting, such as committing suicide. A prime example of the absurd theme is the ending. It is not a normal play, the reader really has to think about the ending. The dialogue is also very absurd because there are lots of long pauses between characters throughout the play. The thing I will remember most about this play is probably the theme of it. I have never seen an absurd play before and I found it very interesting. It was really disorganized and hard to follow at times, but I don’t think I will ever forget

He aims in his commentary to make Cyrano’s morality a joke, and with that he reveals his patronizing nature, as if he is above such petty things as morals. In the use of the “three musketeers and Don Christ Quixote”, characters in literature who are renowned for their righteousness and morality, he brings Cyrano’s stance on fame and success to the level of those characters- admirable, but ultimately ridiculed and fictional. It is clear that he does not care much for the- to him, fanciful- beliefs of his companion and is considerably exasperated by the reluctance of his acquaintance to prosper. Le Bret is condescending and conceited in the extreme, in supposing that his ideals of prosperity are any better than Cyrano’s vision of a life free from the “dirty road to advancement”. He notes that Cyrano has great potential, telling him that he’d “wing up to the top”, but is unaware of the thing that he values the most in his art-…

“American Romanticism was the first full-fledged literary movement that developed in the U.S. It was made up of a group of authors who wrote and published between the years 1820 and 1860, when the U.S. was still finding its feet as a new nation.” It’s understandable that when people hear the word romanticism, they think of love and romance. However, the word “romanticism” actually comes from a movement that changed the way in which various literary writers (and artists) expressed themselves, how they viewed the world around them, and how they conveyed cultural and moral values.…

One thing that he had to deal with was his big nose, people making fun of it and he even did it himself so people could not see the pain in his eyes when they talked about it. One thing I remember him saying was “A large nose is the mark of a witty, courteous, affable, generous and liberal man.” Cyrano has a lot of achievements in his life but one I am sure he is the most happy about would be getting the love of his life Roxanne, to finally see he loves her. At first she was in love with another man and Cyrano helped her get him even when he deeply loved her. “Love is when the other person’s happiness is more important than your own.…

He defeated a hundred men by himself who were going after his friend, he also helped a friend win the affection of the women he loves, Roxane. Although he hated his nose because he feels like it was in the way, he also defended it when others mock it instead he mocks his own nose so others don’t think it bothers him. He is sensitive about his nose but all in all, he is very boastful about it. Romance the main element of the play was all over, from him helping Christian romance Roxane to him finally confessing about the letters he composed in behalf of Christian to him and Roxane finally confessing their love for each other. Cyrano’s struggle against a cruel fate, his ability to stand fast by his ideals in the face of opposition and defeat, his determination to put a brave face on humiliation and finally, when all else fails, to go down with a brave gesture.…

In my opinion, the play exceeded my expectations. I did not expect the actors to perform in a way that made me believe his or her conflict. The setting was well thought out and complimented the dialogue in a way that made me pay more attention to the conflict.
