From War Zone to Holy Land: Rostand’s symbolic settings in Cyrano de Bergerac Throughout Cyrano de Bergerac, Edmond Rostand purposefully implemented symbolic settings to foreshadow the actions of the characters. Each of the symbolic settings either introduces a motif, creates an allusion, or is a metaphor; all of these further develop the theme. The earlier light-hearted settings in the book juxtapose with the somber settings later in the book. This shift in setting is purposeful to represent the shift that the characters take from living honest to deceitful. This occurs since the earlier setting are a relatively carefree platform for the characters before they become dishonest.…

When Cyrano is in the company of Carbon and the cadets, the audience sees best the side Cyrano shows to the world, that of a brave, daring, courageous hero. As Portillo states, “Cyrano, the scourge of falsehood, forces his loved ones to live a lie”(1), proving that Cyrano has no trouble lying to his loved ones. Also proved by the critic Lahr when she writes “Roxane success that Cyrano is the author of Christian’s love letters, he never confesses his love for Roxane”(1) exemplifying the great lengths Cyrano will go to to keep his unconditional love a secret. One thing that he had to deal with was his big nose, people making fun of it and he even did it himself so people could not see the pain in his eyes when they talked about it. One thing I remember him saying was “A large nose is the mark of a witty, courteous, affable, generous and liberal man.” Cyrano has a lot of achievements in his life but one I am sure he is the most happy about would be getting the love of his life Roxanne, to finally see he loves her. In this passage, Cyrano shows that in the truly important moments of life looks don’t matter but rather the character of a person is the source of worth and beauty. Also in Act 4 De Guiche purposefully loses his scarf- which signifies that he is a title of military leadership- so that he will not be a target for the enemy. Upon hearing this Cyrano declares that he would never act with such cowardice:” But one does not lightly abdicate the honor to serve as target to the enemy. Had I been present when your scarf fell low, --Our courage, Sir, is of a different sort-- I would have picked it up and put it on” ( 161).…
