(Combine)The longing and need for love can cause people to go to great lengths to achieve it, even if they are not always right, for example, deception. Throughout the course of the play, Christian falls madly in love with Roxane, but is too petrified to speak his own words. He seeks out Cyrano for help and he accepts. Christian has Cyrano write poems of love for him to give to Roxane “promise me he will write everyday?” “I do promise” (107), Cyrano promises that Christian will because he knows that all along the words are truly his. As Portillo states, “Cyrano, the scourge of falsehood, forces his loved ones to live a lie”(1), proving that Cyrano has no trouble lying to his loved ones. Also proved by the critic Lahr when she writes “Roxane success that Cyrano is the author of Christian’s love letters, he never confesses his love for Roxane”(1) exemplifying the great lengths Cyrano will go to to keep his unconditional love a secret. However, Cyrano is not the only character who uses deception. Roxane persuades De Guiche to keep Christian from the war “why concoct such a devious plan?” “Is it for love?” “It is”(85) as De Guiche believes this is for revenge, it is actually for her love, Christian. Cyrano’s creativity blows many readers out of the water with his talent and choice of words. Cyrano’s poems and letters “My wit...your mustache. The truth I speak strikes more sparks from men’s hearts then your spurs do from cobblestones”(36) have a extremely strong effect on people and their emotions. As the critic Williams states “Cyrano makes an entrance whispers spins the legend of his uniqueness: extraordinary, exquisite” (Lahr 1) perfectly exemplifies how Cyrano’s words have such a huge impact on people and their lives. Also, Lahr points out “although his grotesque nose disqualifies him for women, his actions and words demand an audience” that he may not be the prettiest but he deserves a chance to show his creativity to the world. Although these words may seem for elegance, Cyrano also uses them for retaliation. Cyrano uses his words his words as a defense mechanism against many situations. Cyrano jokes back when someone says something about his nose “your little pig snout, vourting monkey nostrils”(34) illustrating his defense mechanism when someone says cruel things about his appearance. As the critics Della and Amoia state “these lines...humor...yet they convey perfectly Cyrano’s self mockery” (1) portraying his own mockery as a way to seem as if the words do not hurt his own soul. While on the other hand, Christian uses his wit for negativity. Christian makes
