Who would forgive the person who killed your beloved family member? I wouldn’t do that, but I recently read an article about a 59 year old woman in Minnesota who forgave her son’s killer, Oshea Israel. After that, the woman even invited the killer to live next door as a neighbor. My real life example of mercy is when the woman in the story forgave her son’s killer. This story teaches us that we need forgiveness today because if we fail to forgive, people will have wars and arguments everyday with different people.…

This essay will focus on Megan’s Law, a program in the United States of America that is aimed at deterring the rate of recidivism for offenders who have been convicted of child-related offences. The essay will argue that the theoretical basis is inadequate to achieve the desired result due to the lack of focus on offenders and the negative consequences that all offenders encounter. In July 1994, Jesse Timmendequas, a twice convicted sex offender was charged for the rape and murder of Megan Kanke, a seven-year-old girl who resided in his neighbourhood (SOURCE). The mother of Megan Kanke questioned local authorities on why there was no community notification of a convicted sex offender living in their neighbourhood (SOURCE).…

There were two major motives for Gunness to do what she did. She really did have all of the odds in her favor and took advantage of this. During the early 1900’s, when she carried out her crimes, the justice system in the United States is not exactly what you would call up to par with today’s standards. This is clearly shown by Lamphere being charged with arson and being sentenced to twenty years in prison. Despite the fact that Gunness took out a large amount of money from the bank and also purchased five gallons of kerosine the day before the fire (Marimen et al., 2008, p. 94).…

Throughout the book, Just Mercy, the encounters Bryan Stevenson had with inmates was eye-opening to me. When one looks at the criminal justice system as a whole, every person convicted of their crime is looked upon as rightfully guilty. After reading, Just Mercy, that is clearly not the case. There are many people put into jail or even death row for crimes they did not even commit. The case with Walter McMillian is a perfect example of this.…
