In Cynthia Rylant's story "Checkouts", she depicts an unspoken romance between a lonely redheaded girl and a clumsy bag boy. The story told in third person, is carefully worded as to never reveal the names, emotions, or thoughts at many crucial parts, to leave the reader guessing. Ama Ata Aidoo's "The Girl Who Can" is told from the point of view of a seven year old girl named Adjoa. It fully examines her thoughts, feelings, and points of view on every subject brought to her attention. In "Checkout" Cynthia Rylant brings an anonymous aspect to the story. This is displayed in her constant uses of pronouns with no definite character traits and little insight of the characters, as exhibited when the two see each other with their different dates.
