Cynthia Morris Sherman was born on January 19, 1954 in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. Sherman had always been artistic however she did not always use photography as her medium of choice. Prior to her photography days, Sherman used painting as her artistic medium, however she became bored of painting, she felt she had worked painting to its highest potential and was no longer able to convey sufficient messages through this medium. This is when she then moved toward photography where her talent blossomed. Cynthia went to school at Buffalo State College, where her transition from painting to photography took place. Sherman’s photography became quite popular and she was even the recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship which is awarded to select individuals
