Dr. Phil Piercy is currently the Principal and Chief Academic Officer at The Highland’s School, a private school for children with reading and learning differences, located in Bel Air, Maryland. At the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year, he accepted the position of part-time social studies teacher along with the position of principal and chief academic officer. Dr. Piercy’s twenty-three years of experience as a social studies teacher, and later assistant principal and then principal, made him a strong candidate to replace outgoing Executive Director. The Short Bus, written in in 2007 by Jonathan Mooney, is a story about Jonathan’s journey through the United States one summer, in a short bus. Jonathan, who was labeled as Learning Disabled in school, talks about his experiences with dyslexia and attention problems throughout his schooling experience, and recalls the short bus, used for students with disabilities, and is set out to change the meaning of the “short bus”. Jonathan states that to him, most of his life, the short bus he would see coming down the road was “the symbol of disability and pain” (Mooney, 2007, p.6) in his life. Rebecca Buchanan is an ambitious, motivated, passionate lifelong learner who is currently striving to inspire the 5th grade students in her science class on a daily basis. She spent the last 19 years as a teacher for Aledo ISD and is currently a 5th grade science teacher at McAnally Intermediate School. Field Experience Working as a Para educator in the Mt. Pleasant School District had opened my understanding about how important it is the job of a teacher. As I observed Mrs. Ensminger performed her duties, it has confirmed my conviction that a teacher is a teacher because they do not see their duties as a job it is a calling. Mrs. Ensminger, a level 1 special education teacher, is already at school no later than 7:15 am. Introduction Case study Bryanna is one case from the thousands of children that struggle every day to learn inside their classrooms. Using the ten basic steps in special education we can find the correct path for every student with special needs. My transition from business professional to aspiring educational professional began when I left the workforce to become a stay at home mother. As soon as my son started elementary school I became heavily involved in the school PTA. The many challenges the school systems faced was having enough teachers and resources to accommodate the growing number of students admitted into the Special Education system. The ongoing problem that the Special Education department has faced is staffing enough teachers to accommodate a child with a disability. Many schools lack funding or may be in a low income area that is plagued with poverty and this discourages opportunities for teaching positions to be filled. Introduction During my children with exceptionalities class had Kendall college, I was able to get a glance at the different types of disabilities students have. Because of the field hours I had to complete, I had the opportunity to observe an inclusion, self-contained and resource classroom along with interviewing those teachers. While doing my observations I was able to observe a student with autism in a inclusion classroom and in a resource classroom. Interviewing with these teachers, gave me an understanding of what these teachers went through every day with their students with disabilities.…
