Cyclohexene

The results collected illustrate that cyclohexene is the unknown. Comparing the measured boiling point of cyclohexene to the literature value of cyclohexane, there is only a difference of 0.3°C. Comparing the measured density of cyclohexene to the literature value of cyclohexane, there is only a difference of 0.027 g/mL difference and comparing measured refractive index of cyclohexene to the literature value of cyclohexane, there is only a .009 difference. All of these results shows that both the literature value and the experimented values show a very small difference therefore, the results are very well accurate.

9. Explain on the basis of chemical structure why the physical properties (b.p., density and refractive index) of your unknown were similar or different from cyclohexane.

However, cyclohexene consists a double bond which causes a slight difference between the values of the physical properties. As a result of the double bond in cyclohexene, the b.p., density, and refractive index of cyclohexene is slightly higher than cyclohexane. This double bond make cyclohexene harder to break apart, thus consisting the higher values of the physical properties.

At pH of 1, it is highly acidic and more H+ will be attracted on to the –NH2 group to form NH3+ therefore it is soluble in water. The conjugate base for cyclohexyl amine is the most unstable out of all the choices so it is very basic and the more basic the easier to dissolve in an acid. Cyclohexane carboxylic acid is most acidic of all. The conjugate base of cyclohexane carboxylic acid is very stable compared to the other cyclohexane derivatives, therefore it is very soluble in basic

A possible chemical reason that this experiment yielded less than 100% cyclohexanone was due to the spontaneous decomposition of sodium hypochlorite, 2NaOCl = 2NaCl + O2, which decreased the amount of reactant present in the initial reaction when hypochlorous acid was formed, which was the oxidizing agent required to oxidize cyclohexanol into cyclohexanone. Sodium hypochlorite decomposed into O2 and NaCl due to a multitude of factors such as exposure to high temperatures, prolonged storage time or sunlight exposure. If a large enough quantity of the sodium hypochlorite was decomposed to limit the reaction that produced hypochlorous acid, the quantity of cyclohexanone produced may be affected. This would have resulted in a decrease in the production…

The theoretical yield of 2-methyl-2-pentanol was calculated below: 0.0992 mol ×102.175g / 1 mol × 1ml / 0.81 g = 12.5ml The % yield was calculated as below: 1.20ml / 12.5ml × 100 = 9.60 % Conclusion After the separation of the alcohol from ether layer, despite the fact that multiple of trials were performed, the product was still be separated and taken IR and refractive index. According to the IR and refractive index, the product was confirmed to be the expected product, 2-methyl-2-pentanol. The amount of product was calculated to be 1.20 ml and the % yield of the product was calculated to be 9.60%. The reason the experimental yield and % yield was very low due to the wrong distillation method used and some of the product was evaporated off with the ether during the transfer between…

If Unknown 31B were to be an amine, it would likely be soluble in HCl but not soluble in water or NaOH. The acidity from the HCl allowed the amine group to be protonated allowing Unknown 31B to be soluble. Water and NaOH are not acidic and therefore could not protonate the amine group and therefore not being soluble with an amine. It can also be that Unknown 31B contained five or more carbons making it less soluble in water due to longer chains; the longer the chain, the less the functional group has polar influence, decreasing its water…

We will need to solve for the molality (m), number of moles of the solute per kg of solvent, by dividing ΔTf by kf. The molal freezing point depression constant, kf, is given to us for cyclohexanol at 39.4°C/m, and the ΔTf was determined experimentally using Logger Pro. Once we have that molality, we can then find the moles of solute used by multiplying the molality by the solvent used in kg. Finally, we can determine the molar mass by dividing the solute in grams added to the cyclohexanol by the moles of the solute calculated. The answer must be the molar mass of hexadecanol or…

Through a series of test, the type of bonds each of the nine unknown solids exhibit could be identified. Solid 1 was confirmed of having polar bonds because of its high solubility in water and because it did not precipitate in base while solid 2 was identified as having ionic bonds because of its solubility in water and insolubility in hexane and alcohol. Like solid 2, solid 3 also has ionic bonding due to its solubility in water but also because it formed a precipitate in the base. Solid 4 has polar bonds because of its solubility in water and because it didn’t precipitate in a base. Solid 5 was the only solid identified with metallic bonding because it could conduct electricity as a solid while all the other solids could not.…

In this lab experiment, we will be using an unknown volatile liquid in order to understand the direct relationship between the molecular weight of a gas and its vapor density, which will help us determine the molecular weight of the unknown. The necessary tools that are essential in this experiment include: a balance, watch glass, two pieces of foil (2.5x2.5 inches & 3x3 inches), boiling chips, a ring stand, a thermometer, a bunsen burner, and an 800mL beaker. During this experiment, we have to be cautious when removing the beaker because it can be hot, so we have to be patient in letting it cool off. Additionally, not only do we have to be careful around the bunsen burner for being an open flame; however, some unknowns in this experiment are…

Of the organic compounds listed- pentan-1-ol, pentan-2-ol, 2-methylpentan-2-ol, and 1-chloropropane- are slightly soluble in water. Alcohols are compounds which contain an OH group; therefore the solubility of the alcohol compounds is dependent on the strength of the intermolecular forces between water and the hydroxyl group (OH) of the alcohol compound. The molecules of water are attracted, by means of the intermolecular forces, to the OH group on pentan-1-ol, pentan-2-ol, and 2-methylpentan-2-ol, thus making the compounds slightly soluble. These forces make hydrogen bonds with the OH groups of the water as well as oxygen bonds with the OH bonds of the respective compound, thus enabling the dissolving process. 1-chloropropane is a slightly…

    Intermolecular Forces

INTRODUCTION The trends in physical properties of organic compounds such as boiling points and melting points can be deducted from their structures, including size (molecular weight, surface area), shape and functional groups. These factors significantly influence the strength of the intermolecular forces of attraction present; and the nature and strength of intermolecular forces determine the variations in boilingpoints of organic compounds. The boiling point of a liquid is the temperature at which its vapor pressure equals the external or atmospheric pressure. At this temperature, every molecules of the liquid acquire enough kinetic energy to overcome the intermolecular forces attracting them to the other molecules.…

The variation of poisson’s ratio (σ), depends on the variation of the values and relative values of (E) and (G) in Equation (10) and (Ul) and (Us) in Equation (11). For any material (E) and (G) as well as (Ul) and (Us) tends to increase or decrease together. Therefore, we cannot decide the variation of (σ) in the same or opposite direction to that of (E) and (G). Using Equations 10 and 11 we can predict the behavior of (σ) according to which of the two elastic constants varies more than the other. If Equations (10) and (11) are positive, then (σ) varies in the same direction of (E or Ul) and (G or Us) and vice versa.…
