Cyclohexanone Lab Report

This week’s lab focused on a green chemistry reaction of cyclohexanol and acetic acid, resulting in the formation of cyclohexanone. The identity of the product was confirmed using an IR spectrum to determine the major functional groups of the compound. The two main functional groups that appear in the spectrum are the C-H stretch around 3000 cm-1 and the C=O stretch around the 1600-1700 cm-1. The C-H stretch is that typical seen in aromatics, confirming the maintaining of the cyclohexanol ring; and the C=O stretch reveals that an oxidation occurred to the OH group in cyclohexanol, producing cyclohexanone as the product. When analyzing the H NMR of the product, there are only ten total H’s and three constitutionally inequivalent H’s. The H NMR
