This quote matches our theme because part of the cycle of hate is being taught to hate, stating that no one is born hateful. This is exactly what the quote says, in the words of Nelson Mandela. He explains that no person is born hating another person, and that it must be taught to them, and that if we can be taught hate we can be taught love. It can’t get more clear than that. This person goes on to say that they don’t want their child to grow up having the capacity to hate other people for who they are. This repeats the mentality that hate is not a natural consequence of humanity, it is a taught skill that adults have chosen to pass on to children. This parent doesn’t want their child to grow up hating other people, as many people wouldn’t want, and is asking that no one teaches the hate.
Video
The first portion of this video from Malcolm X’s 1962 speech demonstrates our theme of being taught to hate. He continuously brings up the question, “who taught you to hate yourself?” implying that hate is an unnatural feeling. This artifact also brings up the point of somehow learning to hate yourself. The hatred of other people becomes so ingrained into our society that it brings groups of people to despise the way they are simply because they have been taught that their traits are bad. This is going a step further into the realm of hatred towards other humans.
