The abuser seeks to control their victim causing victims to feel emotionally, physically, and sexually abuse within their relationship. Each abuser has their own reason on why they decided to want to feel superior and act on these kind of actions, but still gives them no right to abuse victims. Many abusive relationships start of with the cycle of violence. The cycle of violence consists of three stages: (1) the tension-building stage, (2) the explosive stage, and (3) the honeymoon stage. Not all victims have the same cycle, but they all experience one of them either in different or same order. The first stage, the tension building stage, is when the abuser becomes extremely stressed, critical, demanding, and moody. The victim may still have some control over the abuser by trying to calm them down in order to stop the next stage.This maybe a time when victims can seek out for help and assistance. The second stage, the explosive stage, is when the abuser’s behavior escalates to physical or emotional violence. This is when the victim may feel extremely helpless and alone. Some victims may try to fight back, but mostly end up getting physically or emotionally damaged. This is the time were the victim needs to seek medical attention and arrange to receive help from a shelter if needed. The third stage, the honeymoon stage, is when the abuser shows the victim feelings of remorse and regret. The abuser might give gifts and show affection towards the victim. The victim might decide to forgive the abuser and forget about the situations. At this point, the victim must seek professional help and more information about signs of domestic violence and ways to prevent it if it happens again.
