“Are you gay? You’re fat! Go kill yourself!” These are just a few examples of messages that are sent everyday to kids around the world. These taunting remarks are sent all over social media and may seem so insignificant to some people, but often are the cause of someone else harming him/herself or even committing suicide. Cyberbullying is the use of social media through computers, tablets, cell phones, or other electronic devices that are often used in order to tear someone else down and harm them not physically, but mentally. As a teenager, I have been the victim of cyberbullying, whether directly or indirectly. Having been in this position, I understand the importance of everyone doing their part in order to bring this epidemic to an end. It isn’t only a matter of cyberbullying being the responsibility of parents, schools, or police; everyone needs to do their part to help stop this terrible problem from potentially harming others. The more cyberbullying is discussed, the more informed citizens will be. Parents should talk about how their children’s words will impact others, and how the words of others might impact them. Schools should actively enforce cyberbullying and establish “zero tolerance” policies for cyberbullying offenders. Police also must pursue justice in a world where words are just as powerful as actions. Who has the power to end cyberbullying once and for all? Everyone!
