Hate, discrimination and a person’s need to express their hatred or distaste for another is more common now than ever before. Bullying has come a long way over the years, it is no longer something that stays at school, it now follows the victim everywhere they go. Cyberbullying has made its way into the twenty-first century and with the Internet and social media being easily accessible, the use of cyberbullying has also become a widespread disease. How is cyberbullying different from standard bullying, what makes the bullies so powerful and how can cyberbullying be more harmful than traditional bullying?
Cyberbullying is not like the traditional bullying, the ideals of bullying are still the same, however cyberbullying can be done through the press of a button, the ways in which cyberbullying can be done is endless. Being able to say whatever you want through the use of a keyboard seems to be more powerful than face to face bullying. With every keystroke the bully gains power over their victim, every word typed, every picture sent to humiliate harms the victim. The power of the internet has gained strength over the years and has made bullies not only more powerful, but more popular to their peers. Popularity, especially within teenagers is something to achieve, it is so desired that often to become popular you must take down others to gain popularity. Cyberbullying uses the Internet to propagate aggression, similar to “mean girl behaviour.” Cyber bullies use their power to ostracize their victims, reminding them of their inferiority to the
