Cyberbullying Is Wrong

The Internet has taken over daily life. Anything can be done from an electronic device; from watching movies to taking college courses to even filing taxes. It is possible to wholly digitize everything that occurs in a day. Unfortunately, this also means that the negative aspects of life seep into virtual lives. Cyberbullying is a growing problem that affects much of today’s youth and even adults. It has begun to change the lives and many teens and young adults, but not in a positive manner. As such a problem continues to persist, professionals and the families of victims are seeking help and justice for targets of cyberbullying. It has gotten to the point where federal punishment has been suggested. Many are wondering if making cyberbullying a punishable offense is the way to treat the problem. Truthfully, individuals should be prosecuted for statements that can be categorized as cyberbullying. For an act to be considered cyberbullying, it must be repeated. While their opinions are to be respected, to simply state it, there is a better option that exists. Some believe that this bill implies that the “First Amendment should be treated ‘not as a right but as a privilege’” (Sigmon 1). What is false about this belief is that all legislation can be deemed unconstitutional if it is. The lawmakers of America want to protect citizens while respecting the rights granted to them in the Constitution. It is part of their job to use the Constitution as a guideline in all that they do. There are some that fear that small one-time incidents will turn into over-exaggerated prosecutions. They should worry not; the bill exists to protect America’s Internet users, not to federally involve teens for their mindless, truthfully harmless actions
