Cyberbullying Is Bad

Cyberbullying is bullying that takes place with the use of electronic technology. The term “bullying” is derived from the Dutch language, and means to influence one to do something that they normally would not do. The prefix “cyber” means computer. Cyberbullying happens 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year. Therefore, due to the development of technology, cyberbullying has become a major problem within our society. There is no surprise that over 80 percent of teens use cell phones and other electronics on a daily basis. On an average 43 percent of people have been a victim of cyberbullying. All together, close to 70 percent of people agree and accept that cyberbullying is a serious problem. Even though this many people consider it to be a serious problem, only 70 percent of people report cases of cyberbullying. In the terms of not reporting it, that person becomes a bystander. On the other hand, there are more ways that cyberbullying is done. Creating fake accounts to impersonate someone, and accessing someone’s private files on their personal computer without their consent is also cyberbullying. In the case of Jessica Logan, she sent a nude photograph to her boyfriend, and he then proceeded to send it out to everyone in the entire school when they broke up. She was harassed for months, that is when she decided to tell her story on the Cincinnati television station. She only shared her story to make sure it did not happen to someone else. Then just two short months later, on July 3, 2008, she attended a funeral for a boy who committed suicide, then proceeded to go home and do the same, by hanging herself in her closet. Likewise, Tyler Clementi jumped off of the George Washington Bridge in New Jersey.
