The group of people mainly victimized by online bullying is adolescents due to the fact that “an estimated 90% of youth aged 12 to 17 years are active on the Internet on a daily basis and more than 50% of the youth aged 12 to 17 years have personal cellphones” (Snakenborg 89). An overwhelming amount of data were gathered that supports negative consequences on child development after exposure to any types of bullying. Self-esteem is one of the leading center of attraction to gain a better understanding cyberbullying repercussions. As stated by Leary and Downs, self-esteem is “an internal representation of social acceptance and rejection and a psychological gauge monitoring the degree to which a person is included versus excluded by others” (Leary 142). Therefore, it is implied that self-esteem is a self-value or self-worth influenced by one’s role in the social environment, where interpersonal conflicts such as arguments or any forms of bullying occur. The big question is, “Do those who have experienced bullying or participated in cyberbullying report differing levels if self-esteem that those who have not” (Hinduja – “Cyberbullying”). A descriptive statistic was administered to acquire better comprehension of cyberbullying victimization and aggressor in the middle school. The findings for descriptive statistic are the following: 18.3% got disturbing emails from an acquaintance, 16% had obtained upsetting text messages, 14.2% the offender published inappropriate things about an individual, and 5.7% are fearful of using social communication technologies. There is also statistic reported that 30% of the subjects claimed that they have encountered 9 types of online bullying in the previous month, which point out that these types of aggressive behavior in the online society are what we call recurring behavior. Also, a sequence of ordinary least square or OLS regression models are calculated to measure the connection between cyberbullying victims, perpetrators, and self-esteem. To eliminate possible issue of statistical model like multicollinearity, multiple regression diagnostic analyses were completed.
The final result of the research based on consistent statistical analysis concluded that cyberbullying plays a major role in differing level of self-esteem in both victims and perpetrators. It is statistically confirmed that participants who engaged in cyberbullying regardless of their roles in the altercation have lower self-esteem than those who are not involve in any types of bullying.
