Imagine that your a young girl or boy between the age 11-13 who recently got a new phone that you had been begging for for the last year. You are so excited to download all the new apps that everyone at school talks about, but what you don’t realize is that the internet can be a dangerous place if you dig to deep into it. You can enter a dangerous site that puts you at risk, or you can find disturbing images of naked people (pornagraphy), injuries, health issues. That make you feel sick to your stomach. You have no idea what to do because you have had no special talks about the “birds and the bees” and your confused and curious. After downloading all your apps you start to make new friends on social media ect. You feel content and happy …show more content…
Coben cites an example from The Christian Science Monitor in which a group of parents find out that their special need children are being bullied online, “There are numerous cases where parents have discovered terrible things happening to their children because they used spyware. In a recent article in the Christian Science Monitor, a handful of parents of special needs students discovered that their children were being called ‘“bastard,’” ‘“tard,’” damn dumb’” and “‘ a hippo in a ballerina suit’” at school; a bus driver even threatened to slap one child, while a bus monitor told another, ‘“shut up, you little dog’” (Coben 1). This can be seen as inhumane and many people think that no one could be the mean especially a bus driver. This quote is basically showing that if the children being targeted had not had their parents checking on them using spyware they would have continued being targeted. Imagine that you had a disability like a wheelchair, Down syndrome, ect. And you were riding the bus and or going online only to find that people were calling you nasty names and telling you to kill yourself. How would you feel? Luckily for these children their parents were able to stop the bullying. Therefore using spyware to check up on your children on the internet, to make sure they aren’t getting cyberbullied is a good thing to

Harlan Coben’s OpEd piece “The Undercover Parent” is a powerful piece written to convince parents that the benefits of spyware greatly outweigh the invasion of privacy. Throughout his essay, he maintains a friendly, parent-to-parent tone that one can compare to a conversation over coffee. As a college student without children, I found it difficult to understand the importance of monitoring children’s internet activities. However, when I forced myself to take on the perspective of a parent, I found Coben’s argument to be far more compelling, and found myself understanding the importance of spyware on computers that children have access to. In his article, Coben assumes that readers will have a negative response to the concept of spyware, but he uses his argument effectively to persuade the reader that spyware is not only harmless, but an asset in the toolbox of good parents.…

Timothy Seigfried Dr. Andel English 15 12 November 2015 Technological Influences We have all seen that one child playing with a brand new iPhone and thought to ourselves “I never had that when I was young”. Technology is always changing and it is affecting the way children are growing up. Instead of seeing children with stuffed animals and blankets you now commonly see them holding some sort of technology whether it be a phone, game device, or music device. Most of these tools have readily available access to the internet.…

In “The Undercover Parent,” a newspaper article written by Harlan Coben (in March 16, 2008), Coben insists that parents install spyware on their children’s computer, but to use it only to a specific level. He argues that parents should have this software to make sure that their kids are guarded and that they are not contacting with anyone that may cause them any harm. However, he also understands that parents should not use it to find out personal information or to read the gossip that happens at school. He supports his points by giving many real life examples and connecting them to what parents care about most: their children’s safety. I have come to agree with Coben’s position as I also believe that parents should have this software because…

In his essay “Undercover Parent,” Harlan Coben supports the idea of using spyware on teenager’s electronics by parents. Using this spyware you have the ability to “log every keystroke your child makes” (2) and invading their private space. While this idea is valid because most parents who do this are loving and only want to protect their children from harm, by placing this spyware on a teen’s electronics you are not only evading their privacy but also their trust. This is because more than likely parents are doing this behind the child’s back, which could ultimately lead to distrust and resentment due to the lack of trust in the teen to be able to make their own decisions. However, spyware on computers would, in fact, help to prevent situations…

Not quite. Coben then switches tones towards these behaviors and essentially argues that the craziness might as well extend into children's internet usage as well. He does not simply address the opposing idea here, he instead mocks these parents in one sentence, then declares their overprotectiveness as upstanding parenting in the next. Regardless to whether his main idea of spyware is morally right or wrong, his entire fifth paragraph becomes irrelevant because he argues both for and against…

Harlan Coben, in the article “The Undercover Parent” (2008), explains how parents should install spyware on their children’s devices to monitor them and keep them safe from the dangers of the Internet. Coben supports his claim by first comparing first thoughts of spyware to Dick Cheney sitting in a dark room, looking suspicious and shady and then he provides scenarios of things that have happened to those kids who were not being monitored. The author’s purpose is to inform parents of the dangers of the internet and the benefits of monitoring their kids in order to try and convince them to install spyware and keep their children safe. Coben writes in an urgent tone for guardians to increase the seeming need to watch their child’s actions on the internet.…

you’re listening for dangerous chatter.” Coben is basically saying that is parental responsibility to be the “safety net” for you child. Many parents shy away from spyware, but in all honesty its only there for a good purpose. I think if these kids internet use was monitored, there would be a different outcome of these stories. In addition, I think that installing spyware is a very foolproof way to protect your…

Albert Einstein once stated, “Technological progress is like an axe in the hands of a pathological criminal.” This quote from 1800s-1900s has become even more relevant in the 21st century, because of the advancing popularity in social media platforms. Advocates of social media platforms claim that the internet is what connects the world together; it is an efficient and helpful way of communication, a modernized way for students and teachers to search for information and conveniently spreads informative news faster.
