Introduction
Suicide is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Even though suicide rates decreased significantly in the recent years by 28.5 %, suicide is the second leading cause of death in teenagers from 10 to 24-year old. (CDC, 2017). In light of many recent highly publicized cases, there seem to be a strong link between suicide and bullying which involves cyberbullying and traditional bullying. However, many parents and adults still see bullying as simply part of growing up. Yet, it is undeniable that victims of bullying are more likely to at least consider suicide. Almost every teenager today, in developed countries, has access to internet or mobile phone. Both mobile and internet are the two major systems of communications. Internet was generally intended as a good way for individuals to connect and access the news and the world. However, no one anticipated the issue of cyberbullying. Young people today use social media as their daily activity and development of their social identity. According to recent study by Pew Research Center (Pew, 2015), teenagers spend about one third of its day on average on internet, posting on social media, texting, browsing or watching news and entertainment programs. Teenagers who have access to social media and such communication networks are seriously exposed to dangers that lure behind the access. For example, teenagers nowadays prefer to text one another, instead of simply picking up a phone and calling to communicate. Teenagers are exposed to written form of communication daily which can be simply misinterpreted as it does not provide the tone of the comment or the way the communication was intended to be.
What is cyberbulling?
One of the groups that works to prevent and help cyberbullying victims (stopcyberbullying.org) define it as when a child, preteen or a teen is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, embarrassed or otherwise targeted by another one using the internet, interactive and digital technologies or mobile phones. One major point of distinction between cyberbullying and cyber harassment is that cyberbullying involves a minor on both sides. When and adult becomes involved then is turns into cyber harassment or cyberstalking.
