At Madera High School, bullying and cyber harassment has become a problem and is being combated to the full extent of the school 's power. Although, as much as the school puts time and effort into these cases, the issue still remains. To examine how much of an issue both cyber harassment and bullying is, a survey was conducted amongst the students and staff members at Madera High School. The results gave a general idea of how students react to harassment on social media and bullying at school, as well as how Madera High staff handle these situations. In the survey conducted, results showed that students feel that bullying and harassment, which also includes social media, are problems at Madera High School and that most cases occur on social …show more content…
One question on the survey asked students if another student was being harassed on social media, would the student interfere to help the person being bullied. Rachel Anderson, a Madera High senior who was surveyed, answered that “I do interfere when a person is being harassed on social media because it is wrong for them doing that and it could lead to depression if it’s not stopped.” Many students at Madera High are aware of the consequences social media harassment has on a person. Although, an almost equal amount of students said they would avoid interfering. One student, Tea Layne a Madera High junior, stated that she would not interfere because “I don’t want to start any drama with anyone else.” While some students at Madera High are quick to reach out to those who are victims of harassment on social media, some still are hesitant to get involved in a conflict like this. This hesitation is what keeps bullying at school and on social media alive, because students do not want to take action against those who wish to make a person 's life a nightmare. This situation happened to someone 4 years ago. A female student who attended Madera High School was being harassed on Facebook to the point where that student did not want to come to school. The question was asked “ When a student is being harassed what do you think is the best way, as a staff member, to handle the situation?”. There was a discrepancy in the answers given by the staff members. One answered “I would first talk to the student into telling their parents if they have not done so and if i knew the harasser i would try and talk to them or just report it to security if it is very severe”. Another staff member stated that they would “ Pull both students aside and get information from both. Address the situation and access it.” It seems as if staff members have different ways with dealing with bullying situations that occur at Madera High. When asked if students are getting enough resources and help provided to deal with physical and cyber bullying and harassment, five answered yes and five answered no. Madera High staff members were not in agreement in the amount of help students received at school. It is crucial that the Madera High staff gives students enough help to deal with bullying, should a student need it. However, staff members do believe Madera High School does enough to prevent cyber harassment. One staff member, math teacher Wayne Clemenson, answered “Yes. Given the limited resources that they have, when notified, they seek a solution.” Staff members are not fully equipped with resources to help students being victimized by

The Minnesota law provides training and resources for students, staff, and volunteers and has procedures that staff follow when they report a bully. The problem many times however lies in adults refusing to accept or admit that a student’s behavior is that of a bully. It is only after a student like Megan has died that the reality is admitted. And, because cyberbullying occurs off campus, many schools pretend it is not a school problem. Many school systems also want to argue semantics, and divide behaviors into “non-reportable” categories like, harassment, teasing, and, hassling.…
