Social media is recognized by modern society as much more than a set of programs that enable people to virtually connect with one another regardless of how close or far apart they may be. It is a foundation that holds a high level of importance in ways beyond those that are social. Social media is also a significant tool that people operate for business, political, educational, medical, and personal purposes. Part of the reason why social media is such a common tool is because of how easy it is to access it. Cyber bullying is a form of taunting commonly seen on social media pages that is prominent in the pre-teen and adolescent age groups. According to research performed by Sam Laird of Mashable, Inc. in 2012, 42% of teenagers reported being cyberbullied and 81% of teenagers claimed that bullying was easier to accomplish online rather than face-to-face. This proves why the amount of bullying has increased overall because now teenagers have a way of performing it without needing the courage to hurt someone in person. Not to mention the fact that it is more accessible to complete over a screen than it is in front of a crowd setting. Rather than offering an outlet that forces teenagers to work out their differences with others in person, social media invites them with the chance to hide behind a screen and argue away. All it takes is a few seconds to share an embarrassing picture of someone, type a hurtful message, or even broadcast an individual’s personal information for millions to have access to these forms of cyberbullying. No wonder why Laird also reports that suicide is the third cause of death amongst teenagers in the United States. Its vast capabilities can be used for poor intentions such as unhealthy political debating and cyberbullying, but it can also work miracles for certain individuals. Mark Zuckerberg, creator of Facebook, reflects on social media’s positive intent as he says “There are all these different kinds of things that people care about – there are day-to-day moments with your friends and family, almost everyone has an interest or something that they care about or multiple interests, and we want to create spaces and tools for you to share everything that you care about with everyone who you want.” While he was working on the creation of Facebook, he kept in mind the multifarious ways in which a social media page can enrich the lives of internet users. Social media advances society for major reasons such as economics and interpersonal communications. Whether the world likes it or not, the growth in technological demands is only going to intensify the operation of social media pages.
