To answer the question of what problems students today see in schools I asked my 16-year-old daughter Maddison, her friend Drake, and my 12-year-old son Blake. My daughter and Drake attend the same high school and are juniors. My son attends the middle school next door and is in 7th grade. Both schools are fairly small, the high school has around 700 students and the middle school has a little over 500 students.
Maddison is a well above average student and great athlete. She takes all honors and AP classes and is captain of the school’s swim team. She is involved in several service organizations and is the captain of the Scholars Bowl Team and president on the Foreign Language Club. Maddison is hoping to attend Stanford University and major

More recently in 2013 the Centers for Disease Control reported that 20% of high school teens are being bullied (Cyber Bullying, n.d.). Other studies show that the percentage of children being bullied is closer to 28% (Regoli, R., Hewitt, J., & Delisi, M., 2014). This number scare me, my child attends a high school with a little over 700 students, that means that 196 of them are the victims of bullying, that is more than her entire graduating class. So what is happening in the schools, or what could be happening to prevent such awful statistics from rising, as parents what can we do to stop this epidemic? The first thing that needs to be done is creating more and better communication. As a parent I need to talk with my kids and make sure that they understand what bullying is. I need to do this in a safe and non-confrontative way so that they feel they can trust me and tell me what’s really going on in their lives and at school. Teachers also need to take this important step of talking to their students about bullying. Kids need to have trusted adults that they can turn to who can help keep them safe. There are many programs through the government as well as private companies that emphasize anti-bulling behaviors. One of the most popular programs is OLWEUS Bullying prevention program. This program starts with a school survey to figure out where and who is being bullied and then goes on to teach the children and educators about ways to recognize bullying, how to stop it, and how to prevent it (Bullying, 2016). The program uses text and videos to teach children these important lessons. This program is unique in that it accompanies the common core structure. There are lessons that are taught while teaching specific academia. For instance, in the OLWEUS Bullying prevention program there is a lesson that is to be taught alongside language arts. The child reads the

One way parents could prevent bullying is by knowing what their kids are doing on the internet. Parents also could make their kids give them passwords to social medias or any accounts; or even make an account of their own and ask to “follow” them or “ add friend”. (“What is Cyberbullying”) Every kid should be encouraged to tell someone immediately if they ever see anyone being bullied in any kind of way. Kids should also know that what they put out or post on the internet can most likely always be tracked down.…

Parents, friends, and students can be involved in these courses of action, such as advocating for safer community environments. This can be done by getting involved in your child’s school environment, starting anti-bullying organizations, and forcing the subject to be addressed by students, other parents, and the administration. Creating educational opportunities to learn about bullying and its causes are another important step. This can be done in the classroom by a teacher, at home, or in the real world by a parent or close friend. Implementing bullying units into elementary, middle, and high school classrooms can educate young children on the steps to prevent bullying if they witness it, and it can help prevent the situation overall.…

I was never physically or verbally bullied as a child. I was shy and soft spoken; therefore, I never did anything to attract attention to myself. Instead of harassment, I had more difficulty dealing with isolation. Though this is not same type of bullying we had seen in the video, it did make me depressed and abandoned. I typically felt this while attending McKinley High School.…

One of the challenges I’ve faced that was tough on me going through the tiers of the educational system was dealing with bullying that either happened to me or my friends while we either walked home, rode our bikes home, ate lunch, or simply got pushed around by those bigger than us while in school. The worst one to face was the most ironic as well, Brendan was the smallest bully we’ve encountered, but also our biggest problem as well. One day while we were simply walking our bikes home until we got to the place where we could ride on them, Brendan stopped us from walking along one day with his group of seven or eight more friends than we had. I remember the feeling of sheer fear when we saw him from all of the intense drama of just dealing…

The most schools don’t have anything in place for bullies in their schools and districts. The schools tell you they are going to take care of the situation and they do nothing! That is very discouraging for parents who think that they transition they kids off to an establishment who is careless and complacent in the rules and policies to protect our children in an environment for them to learn and develop. I think there needs to be a nationwide process or chain of command in place for all schools for bullying. I also think that the churches, schools, businesses, communities, and homes should be working together to stop bullying,…

One problem that is ever evolving and continuously effects young adolescence in school is bullying. Bullying can be defined as an activity in which someone intentionally participates in either physically or emotionally harming a peer through any medium; such as words, actions, or technology. By applying this definition to the term bullying, it makes sense that almost every teenager in America can identify a time when they were bullied, when they bullied someone else, or a time when they saw a peer get harassed. And with an increase in technology use, minorities in school, and a growing LGBT group in the education system the problem is only going to get worse. There is a common misconception in the adult community as well as media that somehow…
