There are many reasons why people prefer to follow the customs of the new country. Following the country’s customs makes the situation more comfortable and interesting. For example, I have been learning the language which is spoken in the United States of America. Knowing English has facilitated my life in many ways. For instance, when I need to ask for an address, get something to eat, go to the doctor, etc. Also, to speak English gives me the opportunity to expand my network. The colonists sailed the ocean blue from Europe to the Americas, and for the most, to start a new life. The people in the 13 colonies created a society with the surroundings and resources provided in the land. The colonists kept their religions, maintained their old traditions, and brought their culture over from Europe. Facing the new environment, they adjusted their ideals and developed new governments. Entering a new foreign environment is a struggle one cannot relate to unless they are put in a similar position. Although I have experienced moving to a different American city and switching schools, but leaving your home country to find suffrage in a new territory is very different. New language, new food, new clothes, different social norms; your life in a way restarts. I have always wondered how my parents (both Ghanaian immigrants) were able to adjust to such different environments; it is not a quick and easy task, it takes work. Immigrants do not blindly absorb new cultural norms, they construct new self-identities as they “negotiate the intersection between their culture of origin and their host culture “(Zajacova 2002), in other words,…

Upon finding America, the future seemed bleak in comparison to what the reality of the outcome would be. The land wasn’t plowed and the residence that had been there seemed to have been sheltered from the rest of the world’s progression of the then modern society. As the English men colonized the countryside, along with other countries settlers, it did not take long for the fundamental structures of early America to be created. Religious impacts swept the communities along with a yearning sense of independence rustling within the colonist them self. As the yearning grew a sense of unification grew as well.…

In the area I live in, there is a mix of many different cultures. I’ve lived in the same area for almost 14 years and I've seen different culture groups grow and others slowly decrease. The language the was usually heard when I first moved in has also changed throughout the years and has had an impact on the type of people I now interact with on the daily basis. With the different cultures growing and moving into the neighborhood I live in I have begun to see a change in the type of local shops, clothing, and food. Even at the local schools, I can see the changes in culture and how schools try to have better interactions with the children.…

At the age of twelve, I left the woman I love the most in Vietnam to start a new life with my dad in the United States. I was always wondering why my mom did not want to go with us, and our family could live together. But then as I have growing up, I realized that she sacrificed to stay there, so my dad can take care of me better. Remember the first day I went to an American middle school, I was clueless, difficulty in communication and the people around me have different cultures, and ethnicity. When in Vietnam, I felt so confident and proud of myself, but in United States, I started isolating people, I felt inferior and started developing a shell to cover myself from the world.…

Coming to a new country is an excitement for some but for others it is a huge change. Everything is new from what someone is used to seeing and it might feel like they stand out in society. Most individuals would try to change their culture and adopt a new one so that they have a sense of belonging in society. An example of this is shown in the story “Sixty-Nine Cents” written in 2007 by Gary Shteyngart. The author used different symbols to express his ways of leaving the Russian culture and adopting the American culture.…

“Some Americans think that newcomers to America should assimilate and adopt the customs, language, and culture of America”. I think that could be right. Because when you go to another country with different culture, and you follow their customs, it will show that you are friendly, closely and respectfully. That means you want to communicate with them, and you don’t want to be different. For example, when you travel to Vietnam and go to a Vietnamese restaurant if you use a pair of chopstick and eat like Vietnamese people, it shows that you are a friendly and respectful guy.…
