Answers: The Custodial Services Supervisor role should be a "hands on" position. I would initiate a 30,60 and 90 day plan upon my arrival. When I was hired on as an Operations Manager for Jani-King years ago, I was fairly unfamiliar with the industry - but I knew I had good relationship skills. The company had gone through 2 operations managers in a 3 week period prior to me starting - and the territory that I was inheriting was full of troubled accounts and angry customers. Rather than panic, I knew that the only way to survive in the position was to rely on my people skills. I started visiting the accounts that wanted to cancel their contracts immediately. I would have a full understanding of the service schedule for all the DPL buildings and will want to observe how well each lead worker oversees and trains their staff in the field. I would observe how well the custodial staff follows the service schedule on a daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly basis. There are ways of training the custodial staff that will help them follow every step of the service schedule and avoid common mistakes that are leaving the library staff alienated and frustrated. It is an industry norm, that a new employee should be closely supervised for five to seven days once they start servicing a venue. Proper training from the very start allows for a staff member to thrive on the job when they are confident in their job responsibilities. Ongoing staff member support and coaching is a must. It would be my goal to have a properly evaluated and trained staff in place at this point in my tenure. It would be my goal to have many of the open work order issues addressed, and in the process of being rectified.
