Baseball has been America’s favorite pastime for nearly 150 years, and though the specifics of the game have evolved, the overarching physics allowing the ever-popular sport to achieve the exciting feel it boasts, has not. How well a baseball is hit depends on four factors: angle of contact, location of contact, bat speed, and pitch speed. By looking into the forces of physics that dictate this well-known sport, I hope to gain a better understanding of how and why hitting a baseball works and how one can elevate their performance with a better understanding of physics. The use of steroids, also known as performance enhancing drugs (PEDs), in baseball has been illegal in Major League Baseball since 1991, even though they did not start league wide testing until 2003.
