It is generally believed that most buildings are constructed with typical materials such as concrete, wood, and steel. It is true because those materials provide structural safety according to the building’s height, size, or usage. In Ontario area, tremendous buildings are located and have been getting high-rise and ecologic. While usual people think in terms of common envelope system of buildings as curtain-wall or concrete, from my perspective, Terrence Donelly Centre in University of Toronto and Earth Rangers Centre have unusual functions with their enclosure systems, with sustainability.

This garden makes not only green space indoors but also environmental and enjoyable place, with having benches to relax surrounded by bamboo. This place, as shown in figure 3, also links between the historic building and new building while it is being openness.2
In addition, there are two or three-story winter gardens are located on multiple places in the southern part of the building (figure 4 and 5). It makes possible to have areas moisturized and filled with fresh air by providing meeting places to interact researchers each other.3
The curtain wall system is consisted of double skin with an exterior wall separated by 80 centimeters from the interior wall. This structure provides comport space through main components such as spaced walls and air. The two walls insulate and protect from heat loss and the air space helps to keep the temperature and avoid noise from outside(figure …show more content…
and John Buttner. This building takes up 60,000 sq.ft natural area and acts to reduce energy usage by 90 percent less than usual buildings. It leads to one of the buildings as sustainable technology through the installed systems such as thermal mass concrete, earth tube, green roof, and white roof. The main structure of the building is reinforced concrete with insulated steel stud block as walls and partly curtain wall exterior.5
As shown from the figure 10, the half of the energy consumption of the building experiences on envelope system through heating(35%), cooling(2%), and lights(13%). The greatest amount of energy as a third of the total consumption is controlled by thermal mass slab, which helps to make comfortable indoor space by reducing energy leakage.
22 Kilometers of glycol-containing tube, having water inside, is installed in concrete slab inside the insulation layer(figure 11). The mass system provides better energy efficiency than classic designed ones by 42 percent9 with gaining and losing heat energy slowly. It works for maintaining the degree of indoor environment by avoiding to get peak temperature.9 The earth tubes installed in basement provide cooler air in summer and warmer air in winter by passing through the tube by using earth temperature(figure
