Cursive Writing Vs Descriptive Writing

When it came to writing, in the Dominican Republic, we were basically forced to write in cursive. Starting the first grade, I remember having to do calligraphy every day. It wasn’t until ninth grade that I was able to write in script. However, I do like writing in cursive because it looks more sophisticated and proper. Even though I have lost a lot of practice since high school, I still try to write in cursive when I can. Moreover, when it came to the types of writing, I will only write at school. However, the one that I like the most is descriptive writing because I get to go into more specific details. Descriptive writing is the most common type of writing that Dominican Republic’s schools teach their students; therefore, I am feel comfortable

Some states are trying to bring cursive back into their school learning program, so that kids know how to use cursive. In my opinion, I think that cursive should still be taught in school today so that kids can have cursive to use if they get tired of using regular print in school. First cursive can help by taking notes faster so students will not fall behind and miss any of the notes need to take in college, Next cursive helps the left and right brain cells communicate better, lastly cursive is a skill that everybody will need to know for later in life. Also cursive makes the left and right brain cells work together so each side of your brain works better together. The brain cells working together can help because it can make think harder about stuff because of the cell communication.…

One reason cursive should be taught is because of reading important documents. Many kids can’t read important and historical documents because they are written in cursive. For example, The Constitution, Declaration of Independence, Emancipation Proclamation, and several more documents. In the article “Five Reasons Kids Should Still Learn Cursive Writing” by Katy Steinmetz it told about a family that went to National Archives building to see the constitution, when they got there the parents realize that their kids weren't reading it. The mother asked them to read it and they couldn’t, the mom was shocked that her kids couldn’t read cursive.…

“I can’t make anything out of your chicken scratch,” my primary teacher would upbraid me for my handwriting which visually did not fit into the guidelines and measures of a ‘perfect’ handwriting. Being the youngest in the class — which I was constantly reminded about — combined with my handwriting that was labeled ‘displeasing’ converged into a deep sense of insecurity. My C’s could be mistaken for E’s, my T’s looked like M’s, and all Russian words flowed into illegible zigzags. No effort in the world could turn my cursive into a perfectly aligned congruent font, slanted 30° to the right. Habits stay habits.…

The debate between keeping or removing cursive handwriting is one I have had multiple times with my two children when they have come home complaining about their schoolwork. I firmly believe that it no longer has its uses outside of school in todays society. As author two stated in paragraph 3; "The truth is that cursive writing is virtually gone. Handwriting has taken a backseat to typing as technology dominates the way we communicate. " We currently live in a time where cursive has no place to be used on a daily basis.…

The two ideas I love Freewriting, and Writer’s Notebook. Freewriting was coined by Peter Elbow. Behaviors are learned and writing is a craft. Discipline and hard work develops good habits. If freewriting develops fresh material, and writing is a craft, freewriting requires 100% total commitment to master the craft.…

Cursive should still be taught because studies show that 50 percent of literacy is cursive and it’s a tool that you can apply and gives you more options. Some examples to show that cursive should still be taught today are, you can write faster, you will need to write a signature, and you are more literate if you can read and write cursive. Although some people think cursive should not be taught is because everybody says that we don’t have any time for it or that we already use technology. Well, yes we have the technology, but if we only know how to use technology, then what are we to do if we find something in cursive, suppose maybe a letter from older generations, if we can’t read it because we only knew how to type. That’s just some facts of why cursive should be taught today.…

It seems in the future cursive will merely be a thing of the past, but how is one going to read the Founding Fathers documents if they lack the ability to read and write in cursive. Cursive writing is an important skill; not only does it define motor skills, separate the literate from the non, shows professionalism, but it also looks elegant and nice. With new technology and harder curriculums teachers have taken a back burner to teaching students cursive.…
