Therefore, students who are disadvantaged have no opportunity to gain ground when learning. The teachers that we have now range from very poor to great. Some teachers do not have a true passion to teach, instead they work based off merit pay. Rose states that, “the majority of people who enter teaching do so for fairly altruistic reasons. They like working with kids. They like science, literature, or history and want to spark that appreciation in others. They see inequality and want to make a difference in young people’s lives.” However, the general population doesn’t understand that improving our society and things such as poverty are contributed to having a better education system. Horace Mann specifically changed his profession in law to a career in education, because he believe that there is little to no hope trying to save society by punishing criminals with minds that are already developed by their experiences throughout their lifetime.
