Rationale I have chosen to present Curriculum Night to my incoming 6th grade class, in particular I will focus more directly on the regular education students, while the EC teacher that co-teaching along with me focuses on the EC students. The majority of the non-EC students are at-risk students with less than 20% probability of passing the End-of-grade test. Transitioning between grades can be difficult for any child, but it can be particularly difficult for a fifth grader moving up to sixth grade. According to the Michigan Department of Education, “family participation in education was twice as predictive of students’ academic success as family socioeconomic status (2002). Many of my students are from low income families so it is of greater importance for these students to have parent and social support. Malecki and Demaray conducted a study and found that students of low socioeconomic status are at a higher risk of failure if there is no parent involvement (2006).
